I am trying to find a good cheap digital camera that uses AA batteries, I will be using it while hiking and would like to be able to purchase batteries rather than bring a charger and try to find a place to charge it.

You should go with Canon PowerShot SX130IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera
Shoot 720p HD video with stereo sound while using the optical zoom
High-powered 12x wide-angle optical zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer
Scene modes like Miniature Effect for Movie and Fisheye Effect; Advanced Smart AUTO
DIGIC 4 Image Processor, with 12.1 megapixels; 3.0-inch wide LCD
Capture images to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (not included)

If U want a really good but cheap camera, go to the hock shops and take some batteries. They sell cameras for cheap and U can test it right there. Take a variety of memory cards too if you have them for testing. But buying very cheap U are not losing much when U fall in the river.
Buy a Canon, Nikon, Olympus, or any of the other quality cameras. Stay away from Polaroid, Vivitar and the other junk cameras.
If U buy a new camera, buy one of the ones that are water proof so U don't have to worry about it getting damaged when your canoe overturns.
Get a small one so U can have it handy to use. Forget about a DSLR. They will kill your neck and U will cry like a 5 year old with a ice cream melting on the sidewalk when U slip and break it. There are small cases that U can attach to your pack strap so it is ready.
