The A5000 has a larger sensor, so will give you better low light performance. Both shoot Full HD at 60fps, so they are equal in video resolution and slow motion. But the RX100 2M has 60p, whereas the A5000 is 60i. Usually you cannot tell the difference but sometimes the 60p will update the screen faster.

Both are digital and record still images and (convenience feature) video/audio to flash memory. Neither can deal with film. Otherwise, retiredPhill is correct.

Before you buy either, be sure to download and read through their manuals from the sony.com support area. Be prepared to address internal camera noise being recorded by the built-in mics, video file length limitations, file sis limits and overheating/auto shut down caused by prolonged video capture.

Both cameras are designed to capture digital still images - video (and audio) is a "convenience feature."

First, digital cameras like the RX100 II and a5000 shoot video, not film.

RX100 II

Pros: Small, compact, has a hot shoe. Allows use of external flash and use of the Sony ECM-XYSTM1 external stereo microphone. Wi-Fi connectivity.

Cons: Small sensor (13.2mm x 8.8mm) about 3 times smaller than the a5000 sensor. Permanently attached variable aperture f/1.8-4.9 zoom lens.

A5000

Pros: Large APS-C sized sensor (23.2mm x 15.4mm) which performs better at high ISO settings in low light. Interchangeable lenses for maximum versatility. The Sony LA-EA3 or LA-EA4 adapters allow use of all Minolta Maxxum/Sony "A" mount lenses. Wi-Fi connectivity.

Cons: No hot shoe so no external flash compatibility nor use of the ECM-XYSTM1 external stereo microphone.

Sony a6000:

Pros: Interchangeable lenses, use of LA-EA3 or LA-EA4 adapters just like the a5000. Hot shoe allows use of external flash and the ECM-XYSTM1 external stereo microphone. Slightly larger sensor than the a5000. Wi-Fi connectivity.

Cons: Lacks the variable angle rear screen of the a5000.

So in my opinion the choice should be between the a5000 and the a6000 with the a6000 winning because of its hot shoe.
