The built-in flash is firing when a flash unit SB-24 is attached on my Nikon D5100.
But on page 202 of reference manual (D5100) they said "The built-in flash will not fire when an optional flash unit is attached".
What I'm doing wrong? Is there any issue to take into account this situation?

The SB-24 is not an i-TTL flash, and does not communicate with the camera other than X-sync (when to fire). If the 24 has manual control, or an "auto" setting, it can be used that way, but it is not TTL capable with your camera.

This means that you must use the camera in manual mode to make it work properly. That will also prevent the pop-up flash from coming up and firing.

you need to use it off digital camera, yet provided which you purchase a SU800 (IR on the spot $250) or SC-28 (cable $60). in case you employ a third occasion radio link, comprehend that all of them below $500 will basically paintings in instruction manual mode, no longer iTTL. That few funds you saved by using figuring out to purchase a D5100 vs the D7000 is coming lower back to hang-out you. The D7000 has a equipped-in on the spot function while the D5100, being an get admission to point digital camera does no longer. i do no longer advise to conquer up on your digital camera, however the main reason I dislike the D5100 is which you're paying extra effective (vs the D3100/D3200) for it, and you nonetheless have an get admission to point digital camera. i do in comparison to how Nikon dumbs those cameras down, yet I do see the will for an get admission to point digital camera - so because it rather is the point of the D3100/D3200. yet to have an up-scale get admission to point such because of the fact the D5100 digital camera that has minimum reward over the D3100/D3200 isn't a clever purchase in my opinion, and you will be finding at the two the D3100/D3200 or the D7000. i desire Nikon discontinues the D5100 without substitute hence.

If it is firing in the folded down position then you definitely have a fault!

The SB-24 is a 20-25yr old unit - are you sure it is 100% compatible?

Take the dang camera out of full auto. Use full manual, at any shutter speed 1/200 of a sec or less.
