How can I change file type?

I just recently bought a new Digital SLR camera. It's a Nikon D3200. When I tried editing a picture online using picmonkey.com, a message popped up saying "We can't open this kind of file". It wouldn't even upload to Facebook.

Is there a way to change the file type through my camera, or do I have to do it some other way through my laptop? I don't want to alter the picture quality in any way.

Pictures taken with my old camera were saved as JPEG files. I've been using the same SD card in my new camera, but all my new photos are saved as NEF files.

Personally, I would first decide if I wanted or needed to shoot RAW. You would want to shoot RAW to be able to have more control over the processing of the image. JPEGs, for example, combine the white balance and the exposure as one value, and therefor you can't fix shots that have incorrect white balance problems. RAW files (NEF, CR2, PEF, DNG) separate the data for the exposure and the white balance making it possible to shoot in fluorescent lighting mode outside and still fix the white balance to a perfect level.

So, if you want to shoot RAW, consider changing the camera's setting from NEF to DNG. NEfs are a proprietary type of RAW file that can only be opened using Nikon software. DNG, on the other hand, is an open-source RAW file that can be opened by any image-editing program. The other potential problem with NEF files is that if Nikon ever stops supporting the file type, or changes it, none of your current NEF files will be usable with the new software. Not so with DNG RAW files.

If you don't need RAW files, then just change the file type to JPEG. If you can't decide or think that you may be shooting something that would benefit from being shot in RAW, then choose the RAW+ mode which saves the shot as a RAW and a JPEG copy too.

You can change the file type on your computer using a converter although it is possible to change it from your camera's settings. Just read the manual of your camera.

.jpg are jpeg - compressed files.

.nef are uncompressed stills. Sometimes referred to as "RAW".

Read the manual:

http://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D3200_EN.pdf

Page 44: "Image Quality". This preference is selected in the menu as indicated in the instructions.

Suggest you read through the rest of the manual, too. Best if you have the camera with you to follow along. You should probably do this more than 2 or 3 times...

The SD card used is irrelevant because it does not select the preference.

Easy ok so go into the folder the file is in then go to tools which is on the bar at the top of the folder, then folder options, then view, then click on the hidden folders folder icon, then untick hide extensions for known files types. Then you can rename the file any ext you want.

NEFs are RAW images. They don't work with web based editors, and you can't upload them to a website at the format is not supported in web browsers. You need to use the software that came with your camera to process the NEFs to jpeg.

Also the camera can be set to change the format to jpeg. How to do that is in your user manual. I suggest you read it.

Install the View NX software that came with it. That can convert the Nikon RAW files to .jpg.

If you have photoshop, you can go to file>scripts>image processor. Select folder that contains photos and tick the JPEG box.
