1. Do not save any new file to memory card.

2. Connect your card to computer using a card reader. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer.

3. Download recover software, recommended one is asoftech photo recovery (simply because i was using it and it worked)

http://www.asoftech.com/apr/

4. Install and open asoftech photo recovery, select your memory drive, and click 'Start' button.

I write this warning all the time. If you've been using your memory card as a viewer and your camera as a viewing device you've probably corrupted your card. The photos are probably still there it's just that the card no longer works so, since it's now toast, the photos are also.

You could try a card reader and a photo recovery program but I have the feeling you're going to get the same result.

After you replace this card do this. Upload to your computer after every shoot. Then format your memory card inside your camera after every shoot. This will keep your card "healthy" and in good operating condition. Then find some other kind of viewing device, not your phone, but a real viewing device - even a small digital frame... anything but your camera or phone.

You can very often recover deleted pictures from a camera memory card or USB Memory stick. However, to increase the chances of being able to recover pictures after they have been deleted you must not save any new photos, files or data to it.

When you delete pictures (or any files) from a memory card or USB memory device the data itself isn’t deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren’t saved to the memory card in the meantime.

One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software.

One tip is to try a trial version of a commercial product that will scan the memory card for deleted pictures and show you exactly what pictures can be recovered as thumbnail images in the preview screen. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted pictures or if it’s too late already.

You can get a card reader and hook olympus xd card to computer. If your computer have card reader slot, even better, just put the camera memory card in. Then download this asoftech photo recovery software which will scan the memory card and then recover any lost files from the SD card, including deleted photos, video, songs, document files, and lost files after xD card reformat.

Do you know how to retrieve deleted pictures from XD card? Don't panic. I recommended an advance and professional picture recovery software, you can use Kernel for Digital Media Recovery Tool. That program quickly recover deleted picture, due to virus affected, corruption issue and any other reason. Reference link : http://www.digital.camerarecovery.org

Don't take any more photo's as that will just make things worse.

The pics are still there just the directory entry has been corrupted.

This can easily happen while veiwing photo's on the PC and then just unplugging the camera without stopping it or when the batteries in the camera have gone weak.

There are many photo recovery software out there some are free while others are try before you buy. Just do a search for "freeware photo recovery" and "download".

Here is a small sample of varies software.

http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm

http://www.cardrecovery.com/download.asp

Never had any need to use any of the software so no idea which are better.

Don't forget to run a virus check before running any of the software.

Just in case your interested here is a universal USB memory card reader that you can get that way you don't need to use the camera for viewing photo's and downloading.

You may well have lost the images for good but the best advice I can offer is to use the link below to contact Olympus and see if they can be of any help. There are softwares that sometimes can recover lost or deleted files.

Hope this helps.
