This site contains photography tutorials and courses for you to study at your own pace. https://tr.im/qwxZs

To get started, all you need is a camera, whether it be the latest digital camera or a traditional film-based apparatus!

Read about what is ISO, aperture and exposure. Discover different types of lenses and flash techniques. Explore portrait photography, black and white photography, HDR photography, wedding photography and more.

As others have said, you simply will not find a digital SLR in that price range, probably not even second hand.

However, you ask if you'd be better off buying a normal digital camera (a digital compact). Since you state that you're doing a photography course, I'd say no. Digital compacts are great for casual use, however a course in photography is obviously designed to take you to the next level. SLR's have much more functionality over compacts, allowing you to completely control the photograph you are taking.

Semi-SLR's would also be a good choice, with the same functionality as many digital SLR's, just without the interchangable lenses.

Just remember, however, that buying a good camera will not make you a good photographer, and it is about how well you can use the cameras features. A brand new camera with so many megapixels (which people seem to obsess over - more megapixels doesn't equal more quality) isn't going to mean anything if you don't understand the basics of photography. This wasn't meant to sound condescending, of course - merely a warning.

That isn't enough to buy a DSLR, probably not even used. Sorry.

You are not going to find a NEW DSLR in your price range, and they are one of those items that I would under normal circumstances shy way from buying second hand... Sorry.

You have little chance of buying even a second-hand DSLR, that budget is not even sufficient to buy a new high-end point-and-shoot. You'll probably need to look at a two or three-year old Bridge camera. Many of those have full manual operating modes as well as all of the features of a DSLR except for the large sensor and the ability to change lenses. Things like Panasonic FZ series all some of the older Sony or Fuji cameras.
