A head mount in essential. I've thought about GoPro but it just seems overpriced. So is there anything else that can record very well in low-light while mounted on my head? By low light I mean almost completely dark, apart from a little bit of light from the moon or something.

You have to understand some very basic concepts about photography & video.

You never ever take a picture of an object.

You record the light that bounces off an object.

There are some cameras that have EXTRA BIG sensors and do well in low-light conditions. But they are $1500+, need expensive, fast lenses and are NOT 'action cameras'.

Very few normal cameras can take a picture by moonlight. And these MUST be on a solid tripod and the shutter is open for 5-10 seconds to get enough light for a photograph. But this wont work for video.

Basically - low light = $$$. Action camera = $$$. Something that will shoot video by moonlight - does not yet exist.

There is no action camera currently available that will record useful video in the low-light environment you describe. The lens diameter is too small to let enough light in and the imaging chip is too small to do anything with what little light the too-small lens allows into the camera.

You either need to add light or drastically increase your budget + add light.
