Press the flash button until you see an icon that looks like an eye. This icon is universal to all cameras.

You will normally have one or two options. One option will have the lightning bolt icon along with the one of the eye. This means that the flash will fire every time, AND that the camera will attempt to balance the flash output with the ambient light.

The second option is typically where the camera shows the word "AUTO" along with the eye icon. This means that the flash will fire when the camera thinks it's needed. And when it does fire, the camera will not attempt to balance the ambient light with the flash output.

So which one to use and why? Use AUTO when shooting indoors or at night. Use the other mode when shooting under bright sunny conditions where all you want to do is add a little fill flash to get rid of harsh shadows. Or another situation is when your subject is in shadow (e.g. under a tree) and you want to get them and the bright background all properly exposed. Using a fill flash mode will tell the camera to make an exposure so that the shadows are brightened up with by the flash, but the exposure itself is properly exposing for the bright background. The reason you typically don't want to use this mode in dark situations is that the exposure can often be very, very long. Far too long for you to hand-hold the camera. The resulting image would be blurry due to your hand movement.

I encourage you to try the various modes in all sorts of lighting conditions even if the result is likely to be a bad shot. Getting bad shots is important because it teaches you the limitations of your camera.

Redeye is the flash reflecting from the blood vessels at the back of the eye - the traditional cure is to move the flash further from the lens' axis, which isn't possible with a fixed flash.

A more modern solution is to fire the flash a few times to cause the pupils to contract before the flash is fired - there should be a section in your menu, but the manual will explain it.

Press the flash button at the back of your camera until you see the ant-red eye icon on the display.
