Is the "Cyber-shot" label Sony puts on its cameras mean anything in terms or technology or performance or just a marketing ploy?

Cybershot doesn't mean anything, it's just a name for their series of cameras, just like Coolpix is to Nikon. Sony does have class-leading ultracompact cameras. I wouldn't say so for the rest of their line. Their sensors are medium good, not the best. You'll notice their lenses are made by Carl Zeiss. I haven't noticed any detail advantage over other lenses by other brands. Sony's compact cameras don't compare too well with other cameras. Only their ultracompacts are good for their class.

Return it ... F-Sony. Hate hate hate them and their stupid cameras. Sorry ... had a bad BAD experience with the cyber-shot and Sony's "warranty" department.

Cybershot is just a brand name of Sony's. It means nothing more than the trade name of a line of cameras.

my brother got a cybershot camera 4 christmas. they give better (clearer) videos and pictures. also on some of the cameras, the lense doesn even come out of the camera and it still gives a better picture,(and video)! i think the name is just a regular name that has a specific name 4 the better camera, like kellogs cereal has rice crispies, just as sony has cybershot.

'Cyber-shot' was born when digital photography was in it's diapers. 'Cyber-shot' was a very strong name, using the word 'cyber' which was also unknown for lots of people.

So it represented something new and very technological.

The 'Cyber-shot' cameras were and are very innovative, to my opinion, so the name still represents the brand well, even if the digital photography concept isn't new any more.

It's just their trade name, I believe. I've read great things about the canons and my pal bought one. He's seriously into researching that kind of stuff online all the time...
