Question:
Which one is better for me Canon EOS 50D or Canon EOS 500D? And please recommend other models?

I'm a beginner. I just go in to Photography like a week ago. I've decided to buy a DSLR.
So I'm choosing between the 2.

Actually I want to buy Canon EOS 50D but it doesn't have video mode like EOS 500D so I'm confused.
I really want the HD Video feature of EOS 500D.

Please recommend models that have HD Video feature thingy. Thanks
Thanks

You need to try that video mode yourself because it is not all it's cracked up to be. I recently upgraded to the 7D. It is a great camera for still photography, its primary purpose. But when it comes to video, I'd rather have a committed video camera. The 500D and 7D built-in mics pick up every sound the camera body makes (this includes the autofocus motor in the lens) and the only way to get good audio is to mount an external mic. Even if you do this, the DSLRs don't handle like video cameras so hand-held shooting is pretty much out the window. Unless you are shooting from a pan-tilt head on a solid tripod or some other mount, all you are going to get is really clean, wobbly video with bad audio.

If your are just a beginner, go with the EOS 500D. I'd ignore the video feature until you trick the camera out with the necessary gear to shoot solid video. You certainly can buy the more expensive 50D but, there's no difference in image quality the 50D and 500D. For this reason, the additional money would probably be better spent on a second lens or at least a better lens than those available in a kit with the 500D. That's my experience after shooting SLRs and DSLRs for the last 25 years. Your opinion may vary.

If you are a beginner and it is down to those 2 cameras and you are a beginner then get the EOS 500D and save the money and have the video option.

The Canon EOS 50D cost more partly to being the more "heavy duty" built body, but the 500D is built well, great quality and costs less and you are just starting out. The saved money can get the extras so often needed, like memory cards, lenses, flashes, camera bags, etc.

If video is a very strong consideration then you may want to take a look at the Pentax K-x and the Nikon 5000 also.

Below, I listed some links where you can look up reviews and see what camera works best for you. Also I included some links to some dealers so that you can try and get the best price. Some of these dealers have some of these cameras with some nice extras, free shipping is very common, and sometimes they are offering a free memory card and/or camera bag. Sometimes you have to click in the “add to cart” button to see the actual price.

Good luck.

If you want HD video and Canon then it's going to be the 7D or 5DMk2, as the mode on the 500D isn't full frame rate at HD, and doesn't support 25fps, as required in Europe (you call it the 500d rather than the t1i, which I'm guessing means you are in Europe)

The 5DMk2 doesn't support 25fps at the moment though there is a firmware upgrade on the way which canon have pledged will fix this.

The 500D doesn't have any exposure control in the video mode, whereas the 7D and the 5Dmk2 do.

The EOS 7D supports 24 & 25 fps as well as 30fps, as such, the most fully featured canon, and in fact any brand of DSLR with video, is the Canon EOS 7D.

Hey,

Well, just to tell you one thing. Don't expect good Full HD videos from 500D, cause it has 20fps and that's weird. That's why I recommend you to record in HD.

Canon & Nikon with Video:

- Canon EOS T1i/500D

- Canon EOS 7D

- Canon EOS 5D Mark II & 1D Mark IV - too expensive I guess

- Nikon D5000

- Nikon D90

- Nikon D300s - D3s - D3s is expensive too.

Remember, DSLRs are not ment for quick action videos, you'll probably be best when recording something still (unless you go your own cool ways).

I have wrote an article on my blog about 'Which DSLR to buy', what's important, features, megapixels, brand etc. You can read it here - http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2009/11/what-dslr-should-i-buy.html

I would buy the Canon 50D and buy a camcorder for your video filming, the 50D is in my opinion a better camera than the 500D, but as the old saying goes you pays your money and make you choice.
