Hi have the D40 which is 6.1 mega pixels. And I will tell you now, go and buy the D60 straight away, because what a fantastic piece of kit. Forget compact digital camera's the D40 & D60 blows every compact camera outa the water. Truley amazing pictures and easy to use when you select the auto option, once you get the hang of it, have a play in manual mode. These camera's are capable of anything. Well worth the money

yes thats true regarding the mega pixels. What people who are not familiar with DLSR is it not just about pixels and how many. Its all about the sensor inside and the quality of that sensor. There's very little difference between the D40 & D60 to the affect me and you as ameaturs would'nt notice. When I bought mine and read up on each camera, people favoured the D40 because of the price difference. These camera's are the best for the money, and every pro would tell you their back up camera is usually a D40 or D60, that tells me something!!!

Which ever you decide, trust me you will not be disappointed.

I have just bought a 18-200mm lens and you would'nt believe what this can capture...

Good luck

Toy camera! Both the D40 and D60 aren't proper nikons! Oh and megapixels don't really matter if you don't plan on blowing them up poster style.

Now there are many many many better DSLRs...they just cost a lot more. The D3x and the Canon 1Ds III both cost £3-5000...for a reason.

So the D60 is a decent camera, but its not the best in the world. It does its job, and when you need more there is plenty more to grow into especially if you shoot Nikon.

While it doesn't have an AF motor in body, you don't need to worry so much it's not like you need some old obscure F mount AF-D lens right now.

Finally its the human part of the camera that determine whether or not you take good photos. If you can handle the camera to its full potential then you will, if you just leave it in 'green box' mode then you'll get mediocre results. You need to read and learn, get some photo mags, read Scott Kelby's books and even wikipedia's photography articles are really handy and lets you get to grips with what you are doing.

both cameras are built on the same body and have the same buttons and operation basically there are some differences in the menu settings. Unless you are going to be doing very large output the extra megapixels on the D60 over the D40 will not be used and the D40 since it has larger pixels actually gives better dynamic range, tonal range, geometric accuracy and less noise than the D60. Megapixels matter to a point but they are not the only thing thats important in an image sensor. Here is a good article on digital photo pro you may want to read about the megapixel race

So in short niether is easier than the other for a beginner.

I have a D40 and a D300 and I still use my D40 for recreational photos it takes very good pictures. The D60 would take good pictures also.

Alot of people want to make a big deal out of the fact that the D40/D60 will only autofocus with the AFs or AFi lenses. that does not mean you cannot use the other lenses you can. I use AI lenses from the 70s on mine. And they are easy to manually focus on your camera. You can do if visually or you can use the electronic rangefinder and turn the barrel till the light comes on in the viewfinder. If you must have autofocus there are more AFs and AFi lenses made by nikons as some manufacturers have total lenses and thats not counting the ones by third party manufacturers that have motors in the lens now.

Here is the raw data comparison on those 2 at DXO mark an independant third party testing site

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/229%7C0/(appareil2)/196%7C0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Nikon

And here is the side by side of the specs from DPReview I hope these help

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=nikon_d40%2Cnikon_d60&show=all

I wouldn't compare my FA to my F2 though both are good film nikons so I also cannot fairly compare the D40/D60 to a D300/D700/D3 they are not in the same class. By the same token my D300 is no where near in the same class as a The Leica S2 or Hasseblad H3DII 50. But they are good cameras at a good price. Either one would serve you well as an entry level camera and by time you are ready for something more advance there will be new cameras to choose from that are not even on the market now. I wonder how many people who are detractors of them have actually owned one and not just used them in passing. Look at the owners opinions on the DP review site or go to Ritz or adorama and read comments from people who buy them. They are small and nearly weightless and at first do not have the "solid heavy" feel you expect but they deliver a good picture reliably and consitently. the vast majority of the people who own them like them and I am in that class.

It feels like nikon has 3 cameras with 10.2 megapixel, d40x d200 and d3000. in case you examine out the image it says d3000, I going to would desire to assert that that's what the digicam is. Now with the gap concern; i'm uncertain on the specs, however the bigger the sensor (greater megapixels) is, the better the record is, so as meaning you won't be in a position to take as many photos, in spite of the shown fact that it would be bigger high quality. i prefer to assert all digital cameras now have exterior storage, flash stress etc. those 2 factors will make certain what share photos you have the potential to take good success

D60 is a great camera. It is easy to use and provides excellent images without requiring a lot of technical knowledge.

Yes,there are better DSLR like Nikon d90 but more expensive and for beginner I would recommend Nikon D60 or Nikon D40 are great enough to get and learn with it.

if you know the D60 is better then go with that one, 10 is better than 6, little fact here, even though they still sell the D40, they don't produce it anymore.
