Question:
nikon d40x or d60 or d80 for my first DSLR?

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR camera but can't pick.

I herd the d40x is pretty much a smaller d80. but I'm kind of leaning away fr the d40x. Would rather use the extra cash to go to a d60.

the d60 is kind of my number 1 pick.

the d80 I would like but I'm unsure. the one thing I love about it, is the old black and green led display on the top of the camera for setting info. One reason I'm leaning away from the d80 is the lack of auto clean and lack of VR (virbation reduction), and the fact that its a 2006 (dont want something that going to get out dated while im buying it) does the auto clean rly matter.

can someone please advise/explain which ones the best pick or list other cameras with the same display on top like the d80

I was in your position a year ago.

I read great things about the Nikon D40 and Canon's XSi.

Forget about the display on top if you want to save money.

If you are getting the D80, spend a few hundred more and get the D90.

It's newer, better, and has HD movie.

You should read the reviews and choose either D60 or Canon XS which are about the same with 10mp and other stuffs.

Image quality are all about the same for Nikons and Canons.

Last year, I got the XSi instead of the D40 because it has IS and better everything except the price.

I sold it and got the D90 because of the HD movie mode.

All Nikon and Canon DSLR are great, you need to figure out what's the most important to you.

Great pictures comes from the photographer.

I prefer the Canon XS as a startup for only $460, XSi for a bit more at $630, or the D90 for $1130.

Go the Live.com's cashback and get some moneyback on all your purchases. Charge it to an American Express Blue Cash and get 1 year extended warranty FREE and also some cash back depending on your annual purchases.

Umm none of the cameras have VR built in. In fact no Nikon camera does, it comes in the lens. What you might be confused about is the fact that those cameras often come in kits with VR lenses. I would probably get the D40X over the D60 since the D60 does not have a built in AF motor. I would get the D80 over the other two since its way better than both of them and sort of class above. Probably the biggest difference you will notice with the D80 is better ISO performance and a more solid feeling body. In the long run I bet you will be happier with the D80. In terms of features they are going to be pretty much the same however, although the D80 probably has a few that the other two dont. Here is what my first choices would be D80+18-200mm VR lens, D40x+18-200mm VR lens. The D60 I dont think I would ever even go for. The lack of an AF motor really just turns me off of it.

*Edit: my mistake the D40x does not have an AF motor either, so I would really go with the D80 if you can afford it, its going to be the best camera out of the three.

First, if you are new to DSLR Photography and you wish to buy a new camera, then you are spot-on and I won't repeat the wealth of information the other kind reviewers have already given. I'll just focus on why D40 users need to upgrade.

Second, I dont recommend D40x users to upgrade to this model! true the new futures are a plus however, personally I find it not a big difference. unless you like to keep up with latest technology releases and don't mind paying the extra dollars :)

D60 have the upper hand due to some of the following these features;

- Active D-lightning (No more underexposed photos).

- The new Expeed sensor (as in the D300, reduced ISO noise)

- The new VR Lens which produce sharper images.

- The Dust reduction is a big plus

- supporting 4GB SDHC cards.

I highly recommend this camera. When I bought it I actually had people stop me and say "I have that camera I love it!!" the cashier said "we sure sell a lot of these!" May I also mention it was NOT a electronics or camera store so I think that is saying a lot! :)

And if this's your first DSLR,you should buy with Accessory Kit.

yep, neither the d40x nor the d60 have an autocus motor built in. this will severely limit the number of lenses that will autofocus on these bodies (though you can still use manual focus with many of them).

the d80 will give you a lot more options as far as lenses go. i recently picked one up for my dad for $520, but nikon has upped the prices a bit.

btw, bestbuy was recently selling the d200 for $600 - a great deal. the d200 is the big brother to the d80; better autofocus, faster frames per second, and better (heavier) build quality. i'd look into it....

Buy D80. A friend of mine just bought and the camera is great. Another friend of mine had D40x before, but bought Canon Mark II N - way expensiver. Buy D80 - if you want a Nikon!

well.. other than d80.. d90 also got the display on the top..

but.. IMHO... except for the auto clean, d80 is much better than d40,d60,d40x.. it can be consider a camera for semi-pros...

other than that, d40,d40x and d60 choices of lenses are limited.. they requires only AF-S kind of lenses... in the market, those AF-S lenses are

much more expensive..
