You're stuck with two of the best non full fledged dslr cameras. Real only three differences are the Canon has a 35x zoom and the Nikon a 42x zoom. The Canon rear screen can be brought out and twisted around where the Nikon comes out but only tilts up and down. The other difference is the Nikon is 16Mp and the Canon 12Mp. So other than those differences the cameras are real close to each other. The Canon digic 5 processor is the newest they have so maybe a slight advantage. Both cameras are lighter than the full dslr types and have the ultra zoom lenses. At over 800mm 35mm equivalent you may not really notice the minor difference between the two lenses. If you've handled both (camera store and hold, look through and kind of played with) then it is basically which feels best, which had the controls where you like and such. Which was sort of the easier to work with. I know not having had them for anytime to play with it is hard to judge these factors, but when handling the feel is important. If you are doing a lot of outside shots and are planning on printing large prints (11x17 or 13x19) then the higher Mp number may come into play especially if you are going to be altering the pictures in software. More Mp means more to play with. You can take away but you can't add resolution. Both companies make decent lenses. Sorry I'm not more specific but it does come down to which feels best and do you need the extras one has over the other? SO the higher Mp and reach of the Nikon or the swing out screen of the Canon. These are your deciding factors. I like both and have been looking at exactly the same cameras. Since landscape and some long range are shots are in my preferred area of shooting I'm sort of leaning towards the Nikon, but that's based on my particular area of photography.
