I have bought Nikon D3300 Camera as a Gift for my wife; which doesn't include any memory card. I would like to buy a memory card; yet not sure which one to go as there are many available with many brands and variety.

I am not sure about the technicality of using a memory card with a camera, yet I can understand that the slower the card, less beneift as battery will drain and camera will be slow. I would like to know which suits more to Nikon D3300; and by brand and the techinical specs; please help with the link of buying place for cheaper but in higher quality as well. Many thanks

Page 310 of the manual gives the "Approved Memory Cards."

They start off by recommending class 6 or faster (class 10) for video. Class 10 is also known as UHS-1.

They recommend SanDisk, Toshiba, Panasonic and Lexar Media SDHC and SDXC cards.

The only thing left is the memory size. I have found 8 GB to be plenty big and I always carry a spare.

BTW, avoid Sony SD cards. I had one disintegrate in my Nikon D90 causing over $250 in repairs.

DSLRs do not come with a memory card in the box out of the factory. Some stores include the card with other items in the camera bundle to justify a higher price.

I'm pretty sure battery performance won't be affected much by the speed of the card. The camera won't go slow either. Slower cards just saves slower so if you plan to shoot HD video with the camera, use at least the minimum requirement for that which is Class 6 which would mean that would be an SDHC memory card. As for capacity, 8GB is good enough for photos, too much may lead to corrupted files. If shooting videos, get more GB as you can afford. Any brand will do. What's important is you buy from a reputable store. There are fakes out there.

Rule No1. Do not buy cheap

Buy a top brand class 10 card from a reputable supplier. Buying off Ebay from really cheap Far East sellers will likely mean you end up with a fake. I know because I got bitten!!

Buy SanDisk, Lexar, Kingston from Amazon (NOT an associated seller - see above!!!).

I use these:

Brand doesn't really matter, as long as you don't go too cheap.

You'll need a Class 10card for video, if you're only shooting stills, a couple of 8GB cards (Class 4 or 6) will be perfectly acceptable.

Also, there's no such thing as too many cards.
