I am trying to decide what kind of camera to buy. I have been told that I should get a SLR. I have seen "face detection" in a lot of the descriptions of cameras and I don't know what it means. Can anyone tell me?
Thanks

The camera evaluates what's in the frame to find what appears to be a face, and then it focuses on that point.

Face Detection is a feature in most cameras that comes as a standard since 05 i believe. it basically scans the field for what it sees as "faces" and then tries to focus on those points more then the rest of the image. i don't personally care too much for it because I saw it on my friends camera and it picked up rocks as faces instead of the subject

First off the description given by the others is good.
2nd - as of this date, not SLR/DSLR has face detection.
That will be up to the photographer to make sure the face is in focus.

Face Detection means it will focus extra hard on the faces in the picture so they come out in the best quality. I think it is overrated as it doesn't make a significant difference

It is able to detect faces so that it can make them look better in the subsequent picture.

its facial focal point...on the screen of the camera squares show around each persons face and enhance the features, its really good. i suggest to get a camera with it.
