I would get the NEX-5R

..keeping it under 1000-$$

The RX100 is only 600-$$

..if I was too spend..600-$$

It would be a Canon Rebel../

What do you want exactly? you are comparing a motorcycle to a car.

The NEX 5R has the better image sensor hands down, it will be even more obvious in low light. But it's a bit larger, and you will lose the big zoom numbers. To get big reach, you will need a big dSLR sized lens.

The RX100 is tiny, has a decent zoom, and that's about it. The image sensor is larger than those found in compacts, but Sony negated most of that gain by adding too many pixels, most likely to protect their ILC and dSLR offerings. Had that camera had only 10 megapixels, I would have purchase one right away, and it would have been an even hotter seller. Still a nice little camera though. Neither is a stunner for video, the NEX 5R will pull out ahead in low light, in good light you won't see a huge difference.

My personal thing is to pick image quality first and work around the other issues. So for me it's the NEX 3N, 5R or 6 every time.

While this tool rates the RX100 as much better, read over the reasons to see what is important to you.

Either camera will get you "excellent quality pictures" is you handle them correctly.

Both cameras shoot 1080p video (a.k.a. full HD).

If you want to shoot video, buy a video camera.

I wouldn't touch an EVIL camera like these with a ten-foot pole anyway.
