What exactly is macro? i have a macro function on my camera and it doesn't loook any different.?

i have a canon powershot A710 IS.
it has a "1 cm .4 in macro" on it.... and when i take a picture with the macro, it doesn't look any different on the screen than it would otherwise...

Macro changes the focal point if you are shooting very close to a subject. Imagine taking a picture of a flower very close. Macro changes the field of view and lets you take a clear shot at a very close range.

Macro is also known as "Close Focus". Lens typically only focus from about 2 ft to infinity. Any closer requires a Macro setting. If you are taking 2-3 feet away, they will look the same. Closer to the subject is where you will see the difference. An alternative to Macro focus is to enlarge the photo and crop it. this works only as long as you have sufficient resolution to enlarge. Macro is often used for floral or insect pictures.
