I'm wanting to buy my husband a new camera.
Also what would you suggest the best camera possible is. It has to be digital and my price range is 2,000 and under.

Definitely Nikons are the cameras generally used by only the top professional photographers. As for megapixels the highest I've seen is 13MP.

The Leaf Afi 10 which is a digital back for medium format cameras has 56mp and it's very expensive!!! I'm sure you won't need that though.

Having more mega pixels doesn't make your camera better... it just means you can make bigger prints easier. You might want to read Ken Rockwell's article on the Mega Pixel Myth:

The Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT are both good starting cameras. The Nikon vs. Canon debate will go on forever... Nikon users will choose Nikon... Canon users will choose Canon... I will choose Canon. They both have their cons and pros... one is not better than the other... it's all personal preference.

In that price range, it doesn't matter which brand. Olympus, nikon and canon are all good choices in the sub 2000.

The highest mp count for cameras under 2000 is the canon 50D which has 15mp, but its not that much improved over the 40D.

The Nikon D300 would be the way to go, but the Canon Rebel is a sub 1000 camera.

The highest mp camera right now is the sony with 24.5 full frame sensor that is not medium format.

The Pavlovian response is NIKON! CANON! as though there were no other choices. There are other choices.

Sony. Pentax. Olympus.

The Sony A350 is a 14.2mp DSLR with Sony's version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. Any lens used will thus be an IS lens. The A350 also has Live View which works with the auto focus. Every Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985 can be used on the Sony DSLR cameras so your husband will have plenty of choices. - and every one of them will be an IS lens since its in the camera body.

Pentax also has their version of IS in the camera body. Their DSLR line can use every Pentax K-mount lens made since 1975.

Nikon and Canon have their versions of IS in select lenses. Not every lens they offer has IS. Plus, you get to pay for the IS every time you buy an IS lens.

Olympus also makes a nice DSLR but their lenses are a bit more expensive.

B&H ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com ) has the Sony A350 with 18-70mm lens for $749.99 or with the 16-105mm lens for $949.95 (after rebate) or with the 18-70mm and 55-200mm lenses for $949.99.

Check out a Canon 5D, it's being replaced by the 5D II, but it's still a lot of camera for the price!

It is much more highly regarded than any of the cameras that others are suggesting. It's considered a "Pro" camera, the only draw back is because it's a Pro model, it doesn't have a pop up flash. So somewhere down the road you might consider getting one. It does however take very nice pictures in low light, with out a flash!

Oh, and as to mpx, it's a 12.8, full frame sensor.

keep in mind that the choice of lenses is just as important as the camera choice. i would go for something like the canon 50d or nikon d300 for around $1300, then spend the rest on a good lens. which lens to choose will depend on what your husband wants to shoot...so it may be best to let him pick it. or at least find out what he wants to do and then come back here for responses...

ok to have a camera that take super picture it not all about pixels however you can get about 30 i think but that would be well expensive and it will not make a difference from a good 12 mp ok
