Video Editing:

Lightworks; semi-free alternative to Avid ($1,200), Adobe Premiere ($240/year), and Sony Vegas ($600).

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Unless you buy used there are no dslr cameras for $300. The least expensive that I know of is the Canon t3 at about $450 last time I checked.

I do know, because I use it, of an excellent editor in your budget. It's called TrakAxPC.

Windows Movie Maker is free. It comes with Win7. You can download it from the Microsoft website for Win8 for free.

DSLR's start at $450 this season. If you want cheaper, your option is to get secondhand. With used, camera condition is more important than camera model. Test thoroughly before paying.

You won't get a DSLR under $300. If you want video, you'd be better off with a camcorder anyway.

Free video editors include Windows Movie Maker (PC) and iMovie (Mac). However, you can get Adobe Elements Premiere for around $60 which is much better.

Adobe's naming is kind of goofy:

Adobe Elements = photo editor.

Adobe Elements Premiere = video editor.

Elements is the consumer grade level of their professional photo and video editors, but at 1/10th of the price, they have 90% of the functionality of the professional versions.

You won't find a new DSLR for that price. Besides, if you want to shoot video, you want a camcorder, not a DSLR.
