Unless you plan to do wall size posters any camera of 5 to 7 m/ps will do the job. The rest is really hype and means little. In-fact, depending on the type of photo you take, a too high a pixel setting makes for a grainy picture. Even the typical 2 m/ps cell phone will take good pics up to about 4x6 size prints.I use a 6.2 m/ps Pentax SLR for almost all of my pro work. There are other factors to look for in a camera. If you are an average consumer snap shot taker then any of the under $300 cameras will do. Pick one for your personal needs like weight, size, ease of operation etc. Try to get one that has some kind of optical view finder as trying to just use an lcd screen to take pics is a hassle.

Megapixels aren't nearly as important as the camera makers would want you to believe. What I would suggest you look at is how responsive the camera is (many are rather slow to take a shot), how clean of photos it produces (especially in low light)*, and how comfortable the controls and grip feel in your hands.
