You won’t go wrong with a Canon dSLR. You won’t go wrong with a dSLR from Nikon or Pentax either. There will be no superior brand from these three companies. From entry-level to advanced models, they’re all basically the same with just upgrades in megapixels and other minor and trivial features.

The two best DSLR camera brands are Nikon and Canon Models you should look at- all of which are available at best buy: Nikons D3000, D3100, D5000 Canon Rebel Xs, T1i, T2i best would be to go to a camera store with your own SD card, look at the cameras in your price range, take pictures (with the SD card inserted) and go home and see which camera does it to your liking.

Pentax K2000d. It's a full featured dSLR, small enough to handle with one hand while shooting full auto for those lazy moments but with one turn of a dial go full manual for those critically sensitive shots. It can be bought in a kit with a zoom lens and an external flash gun or a kit with two zoom lenses for around $600. Their current lineup of lenses may be fewer than Canon or Nikon but they more than make up for it by being compatible to all lenses they have produced ever (with the early screw mounts and medium formats needing an adapter of course).
A Nikon D40 is the first that comes to mind, you should go to camera store and play with some different models and decide what you need and whats in your price range. I personnelly love nikon, but thats me, everyone has a different opionion.

Canon Rebel XS is a good Digital SLR for beginner. It is a user friendly camera, easy to use and provide good image quality.Live View Function enables you to view your subjects directly on LCD monitor
I would say either the Canon Rebel XS or the Canon Rebel XSi. I have the XSi and I think that its great. It was more expensive than the XS, but I think that its worth it.
