I have the Fujifilm Finepix A340 camera and I was using a fijifilm xd 64 mb picture card. I decided that I wanted a bigger card and I got a fujililm xd 1gb picture card. The two cards look exactly the same except that one says M in front of the amount of space. When i put it in my camera it said "card not initialized." any ideas on how to fix this?

Did you try to format the new Xd card?

When you buy a brand new memory card, you need to Format it (your owner's manual explains how to do this, so check it). But, it may be hard to find in the manual.

If that's the case, then go to the 'Warning Displays', section near the back of the manual and find the error message about 'Card not initialized' and it will direct you to the correct page. But, to help you...the Format feature is in the SET-UP MENU.

You should also Format your card AFTER you have safely uploaded all images to your computer and you then want to delete all images from the card. Formatting regularly will prevent card errors. Just make sure you never touch the metal contacts on your xD card...

EDIT: DOUGLAS is quite correct in saying that your new 1GB M type xD card is not compatible with your camera. The main reason being, that your camera is an old model and it probably could only ever recognize a maximum capacity card of 512MB.

Please find the firmware update in the link below. If you can't follow the instructions (and they look quite complicated) then you will need to ask someone to do it for you...

Or you could return the card and not buy an M type or H type card...or better still, buy a newer model camera because the A340 is quite outdated.

DOUGLAS deserves a thumbs up from me, at the very least...lol

good luck...

I have the same camera and the same xd card. I just wasted 2 hours trying to figure out the same thing, and stumbled upon it.

First, while holding down the "disp/back" button, press the "on" button. The camera should now be showing you the firmware version you have on your camera. If it says 1.22, then you are all set. If it says 1.00, then you will need to update it. Go to

http://www.fujifilmusa.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/ServiceSupportProduct.jsp?prodcat=710740

click on

"1. Free FinePix A340 Firmware (camera control software) Update Ver.1.22"

Follow the instructions there.

Once you have 1.22 on your camera (or if you do already), plug the camera into your computer.

Plug in your camera to your computer and turn it on. Go to your camera in "my computer". Right click it and select format.

If you toggle through the menu you will come to format card, just keep going Yes till the card is formatted. A better way is to slot the card into a reader and format it through your computer, you actually get a better format and less errors doing it this way, a rep from a Card manufacturer told me to do this on high use cards every few months and presto the errors stopped.

You need to upgrade the cameras firmware ..the A340 isn't compatible with the 1GB card...If you don't know how to format it,I'll not bother typing in how to upgrade the firmware..But I do know...

Are you sure they're just plain SD cards, not SDHC? If the manual says SD only, SDHC is not included.
