You answered your own question when you said "people are so opinionated when it comes to these two brands" It all just depends on a person's personal experience with the cameras. A person who shoots with Nikon will most likely tell you that Nikon is better, and a Canon person would tell you the opposite. Buying a camera is like making a long-term commitment to the brand of your camera. Since you already have a Nikon D60, stick to Nikon. Someone who might already have several Canon lenses and camera bodies will most likely keep shooting with Canon because why would they switch to Nikon and start all over? It's too much of a hassle. Switching from one brand to another will take time and money.

If for personal use purposes I prefer Nikon especially the new cameras from Nikon now - The Nikon 1 System either Nikon 1 V1 or Nikon 1 J1. They are good and super advanced.
