U might get a Canon 10D or older Canon D60 for about $300 off ebay. There's also the Fuji S1 and S2 Pro. Maybe a D1h from a stupid seller who doesn't know better. All these cameras R good.

The Coolpix 5700 is not an SLR. The seller is pulling your leg. Walk away from this deal. The 5700 is a 6 year old camera. I do not fully understand whether you want an SLR or you want a point and shoot. An SLR is a camera with interchangeable lenses, and a mirror in front of a shutter inside of the body. If this is what you are looking for, go get yourself the Nikon D40, and save your money for accessories, like an SB600 flash, a good tripod, a carrying bag, and a 55-200VR lens to start out with. Then, go out and start shooting. If you are wanting a point and shoot, then get yourself something newer than the 5700. Cameras have advanced so much in the last few years. They have more features, better meters, power up faster, have less lag, larger screens, use the very inexpensive and SDHC cards, etc etc.

Pro cameras cost anywhere from $3000 to $10,000.

Look on ebay maybe? Problem is that you will get a pro camera from early this decade that doesn't perform as well as a pro-sumer or consumer camera of today. They might be more rugged than today's consumer cameras, but the processors of today are more advanced.

My advice. Get a used rebel XT and a prime lens like a 50mm 1.8. You can probably get something like that for under $300. It will get you great shots for a bargain price that will rival a pro camera in terms of picture quality.

Don't get suckered into zoom lenses with a wide range attached to a body that together costs around $300. The lens alone pretty much makes 75% of the picture. I see many shooters using a bargain pro-sumer body like a Canon 40D for about $1200 in a bag full of lenses costing upwards of $5000. This is what is considered a bargain setup for an entry level pro.

If you are a stickler for getting a "pro camera", look for the EOS-1 series or the Nikon D1 or D2 series used.

I have the 8mp Digital Rebel SLR, and it's great! I'm still learning how to use everything that it is capable of. The price on this camera has really come down since last year. Have you checked Best Buy lately? I paid nearly $750 for mine, but it has come down a couple of hundred, so don't rule out buying a new one. Ebay might have some used ones, but make sure it comes with a lens. Another website that has cameras sometimes is www.gotapex.com. They have really good deals on stuff. Happy shopping!

Good luck. You can get a decent one new for about $500. I would just spend the extra money and get a new one. Chances are you aren't going to find anything that great for $300 bucks. And I'm sure you aren't looking to make a living out of take photos otherwise you would already know not to buy a cheap camera. I would look into the Nikon d40 or even the Nikon d60. Both are awesome cameras for beginners and you will love the photos you can take with it.
