I'm deciding between buying a Canon 50mm 1.4 or 1.2. Is the extra price for the 1.2 worth it, because of the better build? I've read reviews that both the 1.2 and the 1.4 have focus issues. Is it worth it to get either? And finally, will there be an update to the 1.4 or 1.2 anytime soon? Thanks.

Very few people actually need the f1.2 version. Get the f1.4.

As for lens updates, the last one that I know of that happened to the 50 mm line was I believe in 1996 or so

Lenses rarely get updated, since there is only so much you can do to a lens

If you would need the f/1.2, you wouldn't be asking us here ;) The f/1.4 is already more then amazing. If you would be buying the f/1.2 for build quality alone, that would be a serious waste of money, trust us. Both are built well, and have no focus issues. I mean, no lens is perfect...I use the f/1.4 for low light, concerts, portraits, animals, all around, events, like millions of others and couldn't be happier.

Here's a 50mm f/1.4 Review - http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2010/04/canon-ef-50mm-f1-4-usm-review/

This is all a matter of budget. If you can afford both, get the f/1.2. IF you find that f/1.2 is too much for the shot you are trying to get, you can adjust it to a smaller aperture size like f/1.4, f/2, etc. That's what you are paying for - only that additional f/1.2 setting which is very large and good for blurred backgrounds and low light shooting.

Update? What is there to update? You mean f/1.0? F/.07? They've been already released in some way or another.

I bought Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens to take indoor portraits of my nine-month-old daughter using available light. I was tired of the harsh photos produced by the built-in flash on the Canon 20D or Digital Rebel. A bounce flash improves matters great deal, but I wanted to see what could be done with a fast lens.

50 f1.4.

the difference in performance is not worth the difference in money.

besides f1.4 has very wide aperture.

but if you said f1.8 or 1.2?

i'd say f1.2
