The Pentax has the better sensor, but the Nikon seems to be better for low light.

Pentax K-r 12.4 MP Digital SLR Camera as pictures look great and the low light pictures are excellent. Only two issues are the basic video feature and the lack of the AA adapter in the package. The fast focus, fast shooting, improve LCD, visible focus points, amazing low light pictures and live view make the K-R a great upgrade for K-2000 users.

SONY OR NIKON! SONY OR NIKON! I made the errors of procuring for a Pentax ok-x and right this moment corrected that one. there replaced into airborne dirt and airborne dirt and mud interior the 70-300mm a million:4-5.6 lens in decrease than ONE week. avert in any respect costs! I now have a Nikon D3100 that i admire. in case you have a 1000 dollar funds, i do no longer understand Sony's yet I hear they are great. i comprehend Canon and Nikon. the hot EOS insurrection T3i is out for that variety with a equipment, and Nikon provides the D5100. i desire to propose B&H's website, sturdy fees, and each darned equipment you are able to desire. For low easy, till you are going to apply time exposures like I do, you would be wanting a sturdy flash, and diffuser. there is my 2 cents. Regards, Deven

Pentax K-r is faster (6fps vs 3fps), but in low light, the D3100 will perform a bit better. Plus, D3100 has better video options!

And photos are of course great on all DSLR, just because it has video it doesn't mean photography is bad on it.
