question : DSLR, Mirrorless, Prosumer, or Pocket camera?

DSLR is oftenly seen those blacky bulky camera, the one that professional photographer oftenly used.

if DSLR, then buy the Canon EOS 1100D, or Nikon D3100.

Mirrorless camera is a camera with small size, almost as small as pocket camera, just a little bit bigger. But it has the censor size of a DSLR, but lacking the low light performance.

if Mirrorless, then buy Nikon 1 J1, or Panasonic GF 2 or GF 3.

Pocket camera is those small and light camera, with cheap price. But lacking quality of picture, and has almost full auto setting. So its harder to get the picture that you want exactly.

if pocket camera, buy the Canon IXUS 230 HS, or Canon IXUS 125 HS

Prosumer camera is a pocket camera, but its more superior than usual pocket camera, matches the quality of a mirrorless camera. It is like a Baby DSLR.

if prosumer, buy the Canon Powershot G12, or Canon Powershot S100.

From all cameras i mention above, from all category of camera, i recommend you the Canon Powershot G12, which is so good, i fell in love with it at first sight, even though it is not as good as DSLR, the size is one thing i like.

Least expensive 8 meg DSLR (at retail outlets) is the Olympus Evolt E500 2 lens outfit @ $699. Next could be both Canon XT at round $699 with 1 lens, or the new Nikon D40x 10 meg at around $799. Once more these are reatil retailer pricing, you maybe able find much less highly-priced on-line.
