Digital printing is the reproduction of digital images on a physical surface. It is generally used for short print runs, and for the customization of print media.

The process differs from lithography, flexography, gravure, and letterpress printing in several ways:

* Every print can be different, because printing plates are not required, as in traditional methods.

* There is less wasted chemical and paper, because there is no need to bring the image "up to colour" and check for registration and position.

* The ink or toner does not permeate the substrate, as does conventional ink, but forms a thin layer on the surface and may in some systems be additionally adhered to the substrate by using a fuser fluid with heat process (toner) or UV curing process (ink).

Because there is less initial setup, it is useful for rapid prototyping, and cost effective for small print runs.

Digital Printing is used for personalized printing, or variable data printing (VDP or VI), for example personalized children's books, which are customized with the specific child's name and images. Print on Demand (POD) systems also use digital printing, for short run books of varying page quantities, and binding techniques. Digital prints can also be done on photographic paper, exposed with RGB laser lights from computer files, and processed in photographic developers and fixers. These prints are continuous tone images, and have the dyes imbedded in emulsion layers within plastic coatings. They can be very archival.

In Digital an image is sent directly to the printer using digital files such as PDFs and those from graphics software such as Illustrator and InDesign.

This eliminates the need for a printing plate, which is used in offset printing, which can save money and time.

It also allows for on-demand printing, short turnaround time, and even a modification of the image (variable data) used for each impression.

Digital printing is reaching the point where it can match or supersede offset printing technology's ability to produce larger print runs of several thousand sheets at a low price.

Unless you are hand printing in a dark room, all prints are digital. Even the prints you had done in the lab back in the 90's. All of the commercial printers work essentially the same way. They scan the film, allow the operator to make adjustments, and then create print digitally, even if they are using wet processed photo paper. The paper and printing technology hasn't changed much.

Digital printing is the printing process which allows you to print directly to the press, similar to printing from your PC to an office printer.

The digital press still produces documents in CMYK and in a format suitable to traditional print finishing set up. Toner is used rather than Ink and this, like traditional toner is particles which are fused together and bonded to the paper with a heating process. It is very colour accurate to litho printing

Digital printing Is fantastic for short to medium runs, and is excellent especially for the ability to allow you to produce each sheet differently, so for example, you could personalise each leaflet to have your clients name on it, or print each letter with a unique address or vouchers with unique codes without the need for a costly extra overprinting process.

Litho printing still is best for medium+ quantities, this is due to the fact that it costs more to set up a traditional litho printing press, but by the time the quantity increases, the set up costs become less of a factor and are outweighed by the superior printing speeds and efficiency.

Companies like Claroprint.co.uk utilise both methods and will pick whichever process is best suited to the order you have placed.

Printing methods such as laser and ink-jet printing are known as digital printing. That are widely used locally in home and offices as well. For larger quantities and even better quality, there is digital printing, which could be inkjet, laser, or other methods of printing.

The word digital is due to the set up of the machine and the placement of colors on the screen. The colors are also mixed digitally mainly for convenience.

Manual screen printing can be just as effective but as digital printers become cheaper the less manual printers will be needed.
