Does it have to be a Sony NP-BX1 battery, like the one supplied? Or can I get another (potentially cheaper one)? If so, any suggestions?

You can buy a cheaper generic one, especially online.
But it has to be the exact size, voltage, and have the same terminal positions in order to work
There are kits on Amazon.com that sell a car charger, an AC charger for home use, and two batteries for less than $20 If you have a few other items you want to bring your order up to $35 you can get free shipping as long as it is directly from Amazon not a individual seller selling through Amazon, if you understand the difference.
Just do a search for "np-bx1 replacement battery" either at Amazon or just a general Google search and make sure the item is the same as what you have.

I would go to Sony. Batteries and chargers are matched to each other. Without this match you're risking fire and even explosion... not worth the risk. Don't cheap this out, get the real thing.

I bought non original replacement batteries for my camera ......... they didnt hold there charge and they get worse with every recharge
Some may be good but you wont know until its too late.
When you think of the number of photos you take the cost of genuine batteries is trivial.

Third party batteries can be risky. If it's a third party brand regularly carried by a reputable vendor like Adorama or BH Photo, it might be okay. Their reputation is affected by what they carry. If it's a no-name super cheapo from Amazon. don't.

You can buy cheaper versions, but in my experience, they don't perform as well or last so long.
