I have to hold the battery door down in order for it to stay on or to take pictures is this something that is easily fixed or would i be better off just buying a new one?

You have 2 options:

1) IF you purchased an optional ADH (Accidental Damage from Handling) warranty when you bought the camera, take it back to where it was bought. IF you did NOT buy the ADH, then see #2

2) Contact Panasonic and they should be able to give a ballpark estimate. Go to the bottom of this page for contact info (live chat/email/phone)... http://shop.panasonic.com/support/ You will need to properly package and ship the camera to their repair center in Texas. If I had to hazard a guess...about $7 for shipping and $25-$40 for repair (as long as it is just the door...if you bent the camera frame then it could be $150+).

but Panasonic won't fix it for free. Warranty is for their mistakes, not yours. Oh, where was your strap? - in the bag or hanging from the camera no doubt. Guess we learned a lesson there.

Oh by the way, Panasonic may charge you more than the cost of a new camera.
