Why does my Canon stop recording automatically?

So, I have a Canon Rebel T3, and I bought a 10 speed SD card for it before I went on vacation. But whenever I make videos it stops sometimes and I don't even know, so I miss like half of my video I thought I was "recording". Its really irritating but it still does record for long periods of time, I just have to check now and then to see if its still recording. Please help? Is there something I can do?

What brand of SD card was it? I suspect this is the problem.

Just because it's a class 10 means nothing. That is the burst speed, not the continuous speed, so if it

was a cheap card, you will end up filling the camera buffer.

Look at buying a reliable and fast brand like Sandisk Extreme or Lexar Pro. Do not buy them off Amazon or eBay as there are a lot of fakes out there. These brands may be more expensive than others, but there's a reason for that - they are better quality and less likely to suffer performance issues.

As Mike said, there is a limit to video recording with most dSLRs - it's 4GB, so you can't use your camera to record a 2 hour show.

Due to the FAT system or whatever it is that the file is written in, the dslr's only record for like 10-12 minutes. Then you have to restart the recording. Also, video recording causes a lot of heat on the sensor and in the camera. While the magnesium bodies of high end DSLR's acts as a heatsink, the plastic body of the t3 only traps in the heat which can easily cause the camera to shut down in under half hour of recording.

reading the manual would tell you some of this.

Most of DSLR will only record video only for 10 mins. DSLR cameras have image sensors are very sensitive to heat. If this sensor has reached a certain temperature, it will shut down automatically by the camera to protect the sensor from damage. Of this nature, it is never used a DSLR camera to record a live event, which requires the camera ON and hold for hours.

If you still want to use DSLR for longer recording try Canon 5D Mark III, as it can record almost 30 mins.
