My friend just had a baby and wanted to get a nice dslr camera to take tons of photos while she grows up, i heard the 50mm is clear and fast but i would like a users opinion. Would this lens work well with babies and children?

It is a great lens for that. I had that lens and recently bought the upgrade, 50 f/1.2L, an cant say I see much of a difference between the two other than some more contrast. The 50 f/1.4 is a great lens.

Even the 50mm f/1.8 is excellent and it's at least $200 less than the f/1.4. I shot this with my 50mm just the other day.
There wasn't much light in the room but you can see the result. But, as said earlier, your friend needs to know how to operate both camera and lens to get good results.

Everybody (4 others) say this is a good lens and I would say based on past experience with Canon they are right. But please make some 11x14 's when you get good shots! That will increase your enjoyment 10 fold!

It is a very good lens for portraits of kids.
