This type of question gets asked about which Camera Manufacture, Camera Model is better, recommended, or “Which One I Should Get” far too often.

It comes down to personal preference where some may like how Nikon feels in their hands or how the layout of the Nikon Cameras are. Vice Verse on Canon Cameras.

Nikon fans would be saying to get Nikon. Same thing with Canon Fans where they would be saying to get Canon.

So otherwise it all comes down to personal preference.

Serious photographers tend to always stick with the camera they first got. Partly out of brand loyalty but also because we build up a kit of lenses and other compatible bits over the years.

For this reason, you will get a split of Canon/Nikon answers here. In fact, I don;t think there is much to chose between the two makes; they are both acknowledged as the world leaders.

I have always been a Canon user. Had many over the years and not one has ever let me down. They are solidly built and intuitive to use.

* All modern day cameras have very good sensors and are very capable cameras. You will not go wrong buying anyone of them. We strive to buy the best entry level digital SLR but 95% of us, yes 95% of us, don't use more than 30% of what a camera has to offer. Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Pentax, Olympus- they all make very capable cameras.

* A Nikon lover may say that Nikons have bigger sensor than Canons (22.2 x 14.8 mm for Canon vs 23.5-23.7 x 15.6 mm in most Nikon, Sony or Pentax cameras). If you see the numbers, it is only a marginal difference. This marginally bigger size in Nikon cameras doesn't prove that Canon SLRs are worse than Nikons!! Canon lovers would say that their cameras are faster. If Canon T3i takes 5 fps vs T4i which as say 5 fps. Should you care? Not really. Not for 98% of us. Most of us rarely use this multiple shot features! Then why bother?

* Camera lens is a very important component when it comes to taking nice photos in low light or in abnormal lighting conditions.

* Canon and Nikon are generally more expensive because they already have got good name. Pentax offers same, if not better, image quality at much lower prices plus you can use any old pentax fast lens on Pentax camera bodies.

Usually this argument goes along the lines of who ever has a Nikon, swears Nikon is the best and like wise with Cannon. However I own Nikon D700 and was considering buying a Cannon 5d MkIII. At the top end of the spectrum both cameras are brilliant. D700 is heavy but then the glass is second to none. night photography is stellar with the d700 because of the pixel size not number. bigger the pixel the less noise. cannon has so many other advantages also.

People could go on about this for hours but what it comes down to is how it feels in your hand and what you want to use it for. The reason I was swaying toward cannon is because shutter is much quieter, picture seems sharper, colour is more reqalistic and it's a lot lighter to carry. But if I were to go tot he Arctic or wanted to photograph the Milkyway in the Atacama desert then I would have Nikon

I must have over thirty cameras, but none of them are either Canon or Nikon. My favourite camera that I use is a Zenza Bronica. My favourite pocket camera is an Olympus. I have two DSLRs, a Pentax, and a Sony.

I've never been drawn to neither Canon nor Nikon. I'd have to read reviews for each actual model, but I think that if I wanted to buy a new DSLR it would have to be a Pentax.

I'll tell you Nikon. Jim will tell you Canon. Andrew will tell you Pentax. The fact is, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, and even Sony all make fine D-SLR's...

I bought a Nikon N2000 on sale back in 1986, and have stayed with them since then.

Always look before you buy. Hold it in your hands. If it feels right, you'll know.

I prefer Canon because that's what I started with ;) If I started with Nikon then that would be my brand. The thing is, all of these DSLRs are the same it just depends on which one you go with first. You're buying into a system (lenses, equipment, familiarity with bodies etc.). None is better though ;)

From the cameras I've had I can say for sure Canon is a better option. Considering focus and colors, general durability and picture quality.

I've had a couple of Nikon in the past but wasn't very happy with them. The one I have now is the EOS 1100D, which makes me more than happy

Pentax and THAT is not the answer you are looking for! But as a life long Canon user of film SLR's,

I found the digital models of both Canon and Nikon just too bulky & large in my hands. I was out of 35mm SLR's in favor of 2 1/4 format for wedding work, for many years. When I retried and entered the digital (DSLR) single lens reflex, I choose the Pentax brand. Why? it is smaller in hands and pleasant to hold. I enjoy the viewing screen, but most of all the fact that the stabilization feature is in the body of Pentax DSLR's allows the use of older lenses. Case in point I just bought their $850, 100mm macro lens for less than half of original cost and it is flawless and yields perfect results! So don't limit yourself to just Canon & Nikon in your search. I can understand however, why you deleted Sony.

Good Luck

Of course neither of them. The only camera system to have is the Zenit.

Hasselblad. Or other medium-format cameras

They are both pretty much equal in my book...Pentax cameras hit the spot for me, under-rated cameras that are reliable and produce excellent quality images...

I prefer Pentax, because I can count beyond two and have a working brain.

Neither.

Why? Because the world isn't divided into C's and N's alone.
