I've been looking around for a while for a good digital camera that I can use for an extended trip. The problem that I have with most camera is that they use proprietary batteries, so you have to recharge them and if I am in a remote area, once my battery is dead then I am screwed. So my #1 criteria is AA batteries.

My must have requirements:
- Must take AA batteries
- Not SLR (it must be portable)
- Good in low light
- 6+ Megapixels
- 3x Optical zoom or more

Nice to haves:
- Fuji or Olympus (my current camera is Fuji so I have xD cards, but this is not a must)
- Face detection
- Image stabilizer

Cameras I am looking at so far:
FujiFilm A900
Canon PowerShot A700
Canon PowerShot A570 IS
Canon PowerShot A710 IS

Any one have other suggestions, or comments on the cameras that I have listed?

Thanks!

I am a fan of the A710 IS and the A570 IS by Canon.

The A710 IS is really only necessary if you want the 6x zoom, but aside from that, they are basically the same camera - one of the exceptions being the A570 has the DiG!C III processor, and the A710 had DiG!C II.

here are reviews for both:

My recomendation is an older model Casio

I paid around $250 USD for this camera about a year ago, now you may be able to find it for well under $200 USD.

Casio Exilim ZOOM EX-Z120

7.2 Megapixels

(2) AA Size Batteries (accepts and has camera settings to maximize battery efficiency for alkaline, nickel metalhydride, and lithium ion battery types)

There is an audio recording mode. Capacity is limited to remaining space on SD card. With my 2 GB SD card, I can record over 100 hours of audio

Optical Zoom 3 X

Digital Zoom 4 X

Image Format JPEG

Automatic - Manual settings, best scene modes

Exposure Settings Program, Automatic, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority

1/1.8" CCD

ISO Equivalencies 100, 400, 200, auto (50-400), 50

10 sec, 2 sec Self Timer Delay

LCD Screen Size 2 in

Optical Viewfinder with Real-image zoom

White Balance Custom, Automatic, Presets

Secure Digital (SD) Card Removable Memory

Weight 0.2 lbs

Dimension 2.4 in x 3.5 in x 1.1 in (HxWxD)

POCKET SIZE

I'd recommend using the Energizer E2 Lithium AA size batteries with this camera as they last a very long time. I completely filled 2 GB of memory before I had to change the batteries

For an extended trip with this camera, I'd recommend getting as many of the highest capacity SD cards you can afford.

I have a 8 SD cards of varying capacities (1 x 16 MB [came with the camera], 3 x 256 MB, 2 x 512 MB, 1 x 1 GB, and 1 x 2 GB) and seldom use more than the GB cards unles I'm on an "extended trip"

Even though my recommendation is a 5.1 megapixel camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;

2. Has a 3x optical zoom;

3. Takes "continuous" 2 frames per second "action/sports" images;

4. Has macro feature for close-ups of small objects focused under 6 inches;

5. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;

6. It's very small and light;

7. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;

8. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;

9. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;

10. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;

11. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]

Review(s) can be found at www.amazon.com [Query: "Nikon Coolpix L10" along with pictures provided by satisfied purchasers.]

Good luck!

I know you're looking at Canon or maybe Fuji but there's this Olympus. Model Olympus Stylus SP-510 UZ. Probably not tiny, but 7 megapixels, 10X optical zoom. Battery life is excellent, has image stabilizer, takes AA batteries.

Same holds true for Canon PowerShot S2 IS. Excellent on batteries. Takes AA. Also image stabilizer, 12X optical zoom, 5 megapixels. Both cameras have manual controls or leave on auto.

attempt to circulate slightly up in value. Canon A480 runs between $ninety to $one hundred-. Has very stable image high quality. i won't be able to think of of any respectable digicam for $30-. in case you purchase some thing from E-Bay, you will never understand how many cases the digicam grow to be dropped.
