they have LARGE lense apertures and multi segment coated lenses like proper camera's
Basically Carl Zeiss and Leica have been considered the best optics.
As for Image quality the LENS matters more than the MPix, for example if the camera is 5Mpix but it has a pinhole lens (like 95% of phones) its NOT the number of MPix that determines image quality its the optics and lens..
The bigger the lens the better the image going to the sensor... a good lens (such as samsung Pixon) with a 3Mpix sensor will always have a better picture than a 5mpix with a pinhole lens, when you compare images on screen you are comparing screens not images...
to really see this print image on a A4 page then see difference.
if the cameras have pinhole lenses then there is NO advantage going from 2mPix to 10Mpix you get same poor quality image just with more pixels and larger file size, thats why many camera default to 640*480 images (0.3Mpix) as the they don't show the problems of the lens..

Mr Lucky guess has the best reply so far. Talk about apertures, lens size etc is misleading. The fact is that Karl Zeiss are one of THE all time great lens manufacturers and as a company they have forgotten more about lens manufacture that most newish companies know! For over 50 years Karl Zeiss and Leica designed lenses have been at the very top of the pack and it is a brave man who states categorically which is the better of the two.
BUT dont be misled - there is no comparison between a zeiss lens in a mobile phone and one in a good camera. But it probably is a case of 'in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king' if you know that saying.
Incidentally, it is the lens that forms the image, the digital processor just does that, processes the image formed by the lens and quality of lens is far more important that mp count.

Carl Zeiss are one of the original lens manufacturers. They designed lens groupings like the Tessar and Planar that are the basis of many modern lenses. Their heritage still shows through and companies who are good at electronics quite rightly trust expert lens designers like Zeiss when it comes to the optics.
Zeiss of course are not alone in this field. Leica have also been around for lets say a year or two. Their Elmarit lens grouping works extemely well, redesigned extensively as a zoom lens. There are other great names too. Nikon, Canon and Pentax don't need anyone else to design their lenses. They are forces in their own right.
So, Carl Zeiss are a first among equals if you like. But you may well spot one on the front of a Hasselblad and there's going to be a reason for that.

A better quality glass, Better color correction and Lens coating. Having said that, if you're merely going to be a point and shoot photographer the differences won't matter. If you want to create art, you should get the best you can afford. Speaking of afford, with the economy tanking like it is, check out pawn shops for some great stuff which couldn't be paid back. Don't pay retail if you're smart.

It's all about the glass! A lot of phones or cheaper cameras will use plastic lenses, which will scratch and discolour, and never focus as sharply and let as much light through as a quality ground-glass lens.
My Panasonic camera has a Lieca lens, MMMNNNN! Tasty!

30 years ago "Zeiss" meant something now all major camera manufacturers use quality designs with quality coatings.

If it is just the adverts saying that then nothing probably. You know the adverts, "were the best" "use us" and "forget the others" it drives me bannanas-lol
