Depends on quality but about 1800. More than you'll ever need since you will be downloading them to your hard-drive or flickr.

Depends on the level of compression. My camera is also 14mp and holds about 5600 on a 32GB card at the FINE setting JPG files. So should be about 700 for a 4GB card at the same level, ballpark.

RE:

Hi,

I'm buying a 12MP Samsung Digital Camera and I want to buy a memory card for it, but I'm not sure what type to get- although 4GB has been recommended as the best type. How many photos (roughly) could this hold, or should I go larger?

Thanks in advance!

There are drawbacks to large cards. You get a 4gig card and fill it with 1200 photos. Then you lose or damage the card so you’ve lost 1200 photos.

Use (4) 1gig cards at 300 photos each. One card gets lost or damaged and you still have 900 images readily available.

You don’t say the model so I looked at the 12mp Samsung TL220 for reference. You would store 4,792 images at lowest resolution/quality and 580 images at highest resolution/quality on a 4gig micro SD card.

Heres a link to the user manual. The capacity chart is on page 104.

I personally would use only 1 or 2gig cards and possibly have a higher capacity card only for video if your camera has video capability.

Set your camera for it's highest resolution and forget it. With the card in the camera, you will see the number of photo's you can take.. And if you are thinking about buying a 4GB card and want to know how many pictures you are likely to get, just divide the card you have into 4GB. EXample if you have a 1GB card given you 120 pictures, then a 4GB will give you 480. You know all this is NOT that important. Get out their and enjoy your camera. The way you shoot will soon tell you that a larger card is necessary, But with prices falling the way they have, I just bought some SD cards (I didn't need them now) that were so cheap for two cards packaged together, that I couldn't resist. Remember cards don't last for ever. Having a spare like extra film is a good idea. But so far as I understand memory cards, do not go bad just sitting like film does.

My chart shows about 1100 shots.

You would be getting about 2,000 photos on a 4gb card.
