Hi

I am looking for a wide angle lens for my Canon 550D.

Looking on ebay, it is full of lens attachments under £50 which I am not keen on buying as I imagine the quality is not great.

I am willing to spend up to £500 on a decent lens. Can anyone reccommend one? What wide angle lens do you use?

Cheers

The Sigma 10-20mm is a pretty good wide angle for those on a tighter budget. Comes in 2 versions, an f3.5 and an f4-5.6 (which I have).

Very pleased with the quality of mine;

I use the Canon 10-22 on a 600D, but that is over your budget (£620 at Amazon). Example in the link. Obviously if you've never been there, how wide the image is will be hard to judge.

The Sigma 10-20 is a competitor that is cheaper but reviews show the quality may be variable from lens to lens. (£460 at Amazon)

There's the Tamron 10-24 (£350 at Amazon)

For fixed lenses there's the Canon 24mm f2.8 (£360 at Amazon) but that may not be wide enough.

Beware there are a number of "shops" selling these lenses rather cheaper, but they are far from reputable. Check shop reviews where possible as well as lens reviews.

How wide? What purpose. I shoot full frame, with 20mm, and 28mm and 35-105mm as my regular wide angle appearances, this should be covered on a crop sensor 550D by 12mm, and 20mm, and your 18-55mm kit lens. Here are my recommendations:

Classic Photojournalism - Sigma 20mm f1.8, fast, moderate wide lens for intimate portraits and scenes.

Landscapes - Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX, Tamron 11-16mm f2.8, Sigma 8-16mm, ultra wide lenses for extreme coverage in landscapes.

Architecture - this blows the budget a little bit, but Canon TS-E 17mm f4L.

What's wrong with the short end of your 18-55mm.
