Question:
Canon T2i can't take photos in manual modes?

I have a 6 month old Canon T2i. I cannot take photos in any of the manual modes.

All the auto modes work fine, except the bottom 1/3 of the screen covered with a black bar with the words, "This function is not selectable in the current shooting mode."

If I put it in P mode it won't take a photo. The menu button does not bring up the menu. Only the auto modes will bring up the menu when the menu button is pressed.

I installed the latest firmware and cleared all settings. Neither resolved the issues. Any help is appreciated.

the only thing I would think of would be to contact Canon. Since it is only 6 months, it should be covered under their 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

the manual should supply you with the correct number. Just explain the problem and they might want you to ship the camera to them.

edit to your edit:

Something defective on DSLR cameras from both Nikon and Canon are quite rare, the chance of some faulty part in your camera is VERY slim, but it can happen from time to time.

Sometimes its just that the camera will not focus any more for whatever reason, sometimes the camera just won't turn on.

the simplest and most effective way would be to call the manufacturer

I've been telling folks for a long time that fooling around with the firm ware can cause problems and I'll wager that's what happened. Call Canon

I agree about calling Canon. The number is 800-OK-CANON
