The best one is the Nikon D3X at 24.5 megapixel resolution, but it does not take videos. It costs $8,000 retail without a lens. It is the very top of the Nikon line and is one of the best digital SLRs in the world and for 8 grand it should be.

The best DSLR Nikon makes that includes video is the D90. It is the first DSLR in the world to include HD video. It has 720p 24 fps video - what the filmmakers like. It costs about $1,000 retail without a lens. It is not a great camera for video, but no DSLR is because cameras designed for video are not the same as cameras designed to take pictures. The Nikon D5000 also takes high-definition videos but it is not as good a camera as the D90.

HOWEVER... Nikon has press conferences coming up on July 26th and August 4th and they might be announcing new models that can take video. If you are buying a camera I suggest that you wait until Nikon makes its announcements because what you seek might be announced then and not be available now.

I have been in the digital camera world since purchasing my first digital camera in 1991. The camera had a picture resolution of 640 x 480, and stored the images on a 3.5" floppy. Since then I have owned about 6 digital cameras.

I have heard about how good the Nikon cameras are from my semi-pro shooting buddies. In November of 2008, I purchased some stocks hoping to make a quick two thousand so I could by the Nikon D90 by Christmas time.

Well . . . it took me longer than I anticipated to make money on my stock picks. But now, low and behold, here comes the D5000, with the same sensor and engine, but at a much more moderate price than the D90.

The D5000 would have cost many thousands just a few years ago. And today, for under $800 delivered? At this price, Nikon is going to sell a lot of these cameras.

What does the D5000 offer me? 1. Fantastic pictures. 2. Awesome low-light capability. 3. Very fast operation. It is easy to hold and simple to navigate the menus. This is the BEST camera I have ever owned. I really couldn't ask for anything more from a camera within this price range. The bottom line is handling and picture quality. The D5000 excels in both of these areas. I am so glad I read the many on-line reviews. I finally purchased my first Nikon, and I'm loving it!

Wow some of these people are rude today. I've been looking into Nikons for a while due to being a photographer and wanting to do photography and infrared both.

First it depends on what you want to spend. You're looking at $400-$8000 on Nikons. The D40 is the cheapest...then D50, D60, D70, D80, D90, D200, D300 and several more models that go all the way up to the $8000 price! There's alot of cameras and alot of prices depending on where you go...walmart, adorama, costco, bestbuy, amazon, B&H...

Once you decide your budget (dont forget lenses, filters and accessories down the road) then go from there. Decide what features you want the most and go to dpreview.com and browse their nikon section. They have all the info you could ever need on cameras and forums for asking users. There's a camera finder and a side by side comparison place where you can select the Nikons (or other brands) and compare them. That will make it easier to decide. Currently i'm stuck with wanting the D90. It has awesome abilities and will do almost anything anyone other than rich professionals would need and has lots of nice accessories. The D90 is perfect unless you plan on doing sports and in that case the D300. The D90 has 12 AF points compared to the D300 55AF points (AF is auto-focus). If you want to spend less the new D5000 is a blend between the popular older nikons and the D90 for around $850. It's a better value unless you plan to go pro. Good luck and remember to go to Dpreview and do some research!

The Nikon D700 is a great full-framed dSLR. I don't know (or not even interested) if it takes videos or not.

The point is good still cameras do not make good video cameras. It is the same the other way around. Hardware requirements differ greatly between the two. If you want to the best of both worlds, get two cameras, one great still camera and one great video camera.

It depends on the first camera you are gonna buy. If you get canon first nikon will be so strange and vice versa. From my personal experience (not so big exp, just with my friends camera and mine) i found my Nikon is farbetter than the canon XSi and Xti. I use a Nikon D60.

Why, how good are you at using them? If money was no object, you wouldn't be here asking us, you'd have your butler down the store picking one up for you.

Frankly, I was surprised when I saw the D5000 does video. It won't be as fully featured as a dedicated video camera. So again, if money was no object you'd buy a still camera and a separate video camera - no problem, your butler will carry them for you.

Familiarity with your equipment, skill at positioning yourself, knowledge of the various factors affecting the light that makes your images - all these result in good shots.

In theory, spending the maximum you can afford on a camera will get you the best, but then you might not have any left over for extra lenses - a super-range zoom won't perform as well as those with a smaller range. Fixed focal lengths will out-perform even those.

And then there's those Speedlite flashes to spend any remain pennies on.

Care to phrase a new question?

It all depends how much money you want to spend. In the lower price range for camera and a 18-105 zoom lens for $800-$1200 you have two excellent models, D5000 and D90. Both are capable of taking high quality pictures and videos.

D90 is not the best. Nikon has better. consider D300 or D700 or D3/D3x. or wait till the end of the month, I am hearing rumors of a DSLR launch in the end of the month or so ... But D90 is not going to be replaced till 1 yr more .......
