there is not a big difference, the optical zoom is what they call how far you can zoom in on something. with 4x, you can zoom in to something 4 times it's normal size. 5x means you can zoom 5 times it's normal size. so, if you want to shoot a baseball game, you can zoom closer to the action with the 5x rather than the 4x. this is not a huge difference, and should not be a big consideration if you are comparing two cameras. 4x and 5x are pretty much the same, if the 4x camera has better features, buy it over the 5x. if the 5x camera has better features, then you are good to go.

The 18-55mm lens is respectable for landscapes or individuals pics. It could no longer paintings good in physical activities or, to your case, an airshow. When you speak approximately 2x or 3x, it's 2x of "what" to begin - that being the cut back quantity quantity within the zoom. So 3x of 18mm is 54mm, so the 18-55mm is a 3x. That should not be burdened with a 70-200mm zoom, in which 2x of 70 is 210, so it is usually a 3X zoom. Most brands have respectable telephoto zooms that move from approximately 70-300mm. The key to utilizing those effortlessly is to make certain you shoot on a sunny day, and maintain your shutter velocity very prime - one million/500 of a moment or extra.

Also remember the widest setting on the camera is going to determine how close you can zoom. e.g.
If you have a 28mm wide setting and 5x optical zoom the most you can zoom is equivalent to 140mm.
If your camera starts at 35mm at its widest setting with 5 x optical zoom then you get to 175mm (but lose the extra wide angle of course).
