Yes, FX and DX are related to the size of the image sensor, FX lenses are bigger than DX which have smaller glass elements to reduce their cost, a FX lens in a DX camera means you'll have more than enough glass to cover the sensor on the camera.

Just make sure you're looking for an AF-S lens since older AF-D lenses don't have a built in autofocus motor and some budget cameras like the D3200 don't have it on the body which means you'd have manual focus only, same reason again to reduce cost Nikon only have the autofocus motor on more expensive cameras, since AF-S was introduced they have a built in autofocus motor on the lens itself and claim to be faster to focus.

Hi

Simple answer is yes FX lens will work on DX camera as both use Nikon's venerable F Mount for lens.

As some one else pointed out you must look out that the lens is AF-S otherwise you will be stuck with manual focusing as only the DX d7100 has the built in AF motor.

Furthermore you have to step up the magnification for FX lens by 1.5, I have a Sigma 150-500mm lens which is for FX cameras, mounted on my d7100 this is effectively a 225-750mm lens.

I find it impossible that you are having a hard time finding lens, might I suggest Cameraworld.co.uk, Calumet, Jessops, Wex Photographic, Grays of Westminster. Just buy any photography magazines, loads of these shops advertise in them.

Any Nikon "F" mount lens - DX format or FX format - can be used on any Nikon DSLR.
