I just started using the D300. Everything is great except the white balance. The auto WB is never accurate, and I don't know how to go about setting the Kelvin degrees. Does anyone know any good techniques how to get 100% accurate WB on a D300? Or maybe a chart that will help me set the WB my self? Also, I would like to know how to set a white balance from a photo but I can't find it in the manual.

I dont have a D300, but I have a D80.

First, you set the white balance to "pre" which stands for preset (Use the "WB" button and rotate the main dial). Now, press teh WB button again and hold it for 2 seconds. You should see a "PRE" flashing in the viewfinder and top display screen. Now, using a neutral gray or white sheet of paper, place it under the light you are shooting in, zoom in so that the paper completely fills the viewfinder, and take a shot. If successful, the viewfinder will have "good" blinking. If not, it will have "no gd".

Usually, I just use the presets that came with the camera (shade, sunny, cloudy, etc) and go from there. Besides, white balance and colour is easily corrected in most photo editing softwares.

Where it is..... at about 4 o'clock in relation to the on/off switch with the black/white +/- on it. What it is..... so you can override the camera's selection of exposure in exposure modes other than M. The quality of light changes at different times of the day/indoor/with flash so the white balance can be used to compensate for it. If you use RAW you can do that in processing. The wrong white balance can give photos a colour cast, e.g. too blue later in the day for example, if daylight (blue sky) is used. Edit Yes, if you use M mode then you don't need exposure compensation, you just set a different exposure.

White balance: Auto, seven presets, 4 manual presets. color temp in kelvin (2500-10000 k, 31 steps) when u select auto u cant set color temp, it wont work, before taking a pic focus on a white surface it would auto balance u r WB.

true white balance: set to manual, use lens "cap" for white balance (about 60.00) and you will get it perfect. The Auto white balance can screw up color at times....sunsets need to be overridden with "shade" white balance to restore the brilliant reds, etc.
