Maybe you should try Canon Power shot A460. I think it's Canon's least expensive digital camera. Its cheap but its material is superb just like any Canon digital cameras.

When you buy an SLR camera the main benefit is that you are buying not just a camera, but buying access to a system. In that regard the two best systems are Canon & Nikon, they have the widest range of lenses and accessories and you can't really go wrong with either. I am biased, I am a canon user, for that reason I would always choose them over Nikon, for no other reason than personal preference. The key thing is to get hands on with the camera, the XSi is great value and will leave you wanting very little as an introduction to DSLR photography, to my mind, bias aside it has the better feature set compared to nikons of the same price, but a camera is also a very personal thing. You need to try it in the hand. Believe it or not the XS actually has a marginally better picture quality if you are doing landscapes or macro work, or any work where you use a small aperture. Bear this in mind. The XS and XSi also outperform the 50D at smaller apertures. Too many pixels on a small sensor... Good luck.

The 450 and 460 are new this year. The 460 has a bit more zoom power, so I'd go for that.
