Canon SX30IS 14.1MP Digital Camera with 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 Inch Wide LCD

or

Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

I can get the first for about $200 or the rebel for around $270 used
I want to be able to take normal all around pics but also I am wanting to be able to take wide angle shots of sunsets and also be able to zoom in on small flowers and such. I want the wide angle images more importantly than anything else! thanks

The SX310IS will be better out of the box but the XS has greater future potential.

Those prices look a little high to me. For that I would expect them to be from a dealer with a warranty and all leads, CDs and documents to be present.

Same conditions as above from a private seller (no warranty) then I would take around $50-75 off those prices.

One is a "bridge" type camera with a permanently attached zoom lens. The zoom lens serves as macro lens, a wide angle lens, and a telephoto lens. You can not add or chages lenses on this type camera.

The Rebel Sx is known as a DSLR or Digital Single Lens Reflex camera it has a short zoom lens from wide angle to a very short telephoto lens. And will not do macro (close-up flowers, etc.). That said this camera is technically the best mechanically and optically. BUT each time you have a special subject like the close up of a flower you need another (macro) lens. This method of photography is the most expensive to own owning to the high price of extra lenses. If you do or plann on doing a lot of 11x14 or 16x20 size enlargements, you can't best this type of camera.

But for better all around use (carryng just the camera) the Canon Sx30 IS easiest and best as opposed to carrying the camera (Canon Rebel SX) and abunch of lenses in a gadget bag.

i would personally pick the SLR since it IS an SLR. lol. you can use different lenses including a lens for wide or long range shots. but thinking of how many megapixels it has, the digital camera surely surpasses the SLR. maybe you should check Canon EOS 5D out :)

I owned an XS for several years, an excellent camera. I'd always choose a dslr over any point and shoot.

If you know how to use one, a DSLR will beat a point and shoot every time.
