RAW images contain unprocessed image data direct from the camera's sensor. In order to convert this data into more usable formats((jpeg)) you must first process the data on your computer with a specific software((i use the the image data convertor which comes with my camera and photo shop CS2)).

here u can adjust every RAW property u can think of..from white balance to exposure to sharpness and color,,if u like to play with tone curves ....reduce the noise,,add some affects to ur image ..

all this can be done with RAW image via a special software.

it'salmost like u get a second chance to take ur photo.

but u have to note that it's alot larger than their jpeg equivalents ...so it will take up quite a bit of space on ur memory card.

RAW is the image file format. A raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and ready to be used with a bitmap graphics editor or printed. Normally, the image will be processed by a raw converter in a wide-gamut internal colorspace where precise adjustments can be made before conversion to an RGB file format such as TIFF or JPEG for storage, printing, or further manipulation

Cannon explains this here,

Image format offered on high-end cameras which stores the raw data from the imaging chip before it’s been processed; this file is usually stored uncompressed or with lossless compression. RAW images are normally less than half the size of TIFFs, while offering the greatest potential image quality, but must be processed into a usable image format using software later.

'RAW' means as it is! Unprocessed! It's like 'Raw meat'...unseasoned or cooked?

So, it this case.... if you take picture in 'RAW' format( Mega-pixels), it will take up a large amount of memory space ( 1-2MB minimum or more).

'RAW' format usually meant for professional photographer. Or if you need to do you own editing later on. Normal picture taking, you can go for compress format like 'JPG'. Commonly use are from 1024x 768 to 2048x1536 pixels. It is good enough.
