I currently have the Canon power shot SX30 IS, and photograph birds and other forms of nature (macros included, with my Raynox DCR-250

What would be some cheaper telephoto lenses that could suffice?

The Canon Powershot s"SX" series does not have an interchangeable lens. No additional lenses can be used with this camera. If you want to be really happy with your camera, why don't you price a lens for the Canon EOS Rebel t3 (DSLR) which is equal to the longest magnification on your SX30 IS. I think you will find that it will almost take a "second mortgage" on your house to afford a lens that is as long as the lens on the SX30 IS for the Canon EOS Rebel t3. You don't want "cheaper telephoto lenses for your t3 as the quality becomes terrible when you try and make an 11x14 print.

I have a Canon Powershot SX10 IS AND a Pentax Kx DSLR, both have their purpose in my gadget bag!

Nope, no lens for the T3 is going to be cheaper than anything for the SX30. Look over the Canon lenses and see if you can find any telephoto lens that is cheaper than anything you can get for the SX30.

A good balance in performance and price is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm, but a local dealer can advise you. If you aren't aware that your 18-55mm can be removed and replaced with such a lens, however, perhaps you should spend a little more time reading your manual and gaining experience.

The one I would choose would be the 28-200 but dslr lenses bare no similarity to those used on the small, cheap cameras. These lenses cost a whole lot more, have much better glass but don't zoom nearly as far.

If it's long zoom you like stick with the cheap cameras.
