I am looking to sell my Nikon D5000 and get a compact camera, can someone recommend the nicest one I can purchase for under $300, I travel a lot and take pictures of landscapes and portraits....looking for very high resolution and color.

Look for some of the older models of premium compacts. These models have been superseded by a newer version but are still available new and at a good discount. Examples would include the Canon s110 or Fujifilm X10.
