No they are not. Don't try anymore or you might break something. Return the Sony lens and exchange it for a Nikkor lens. The only exception being that Fuji professional cameras use Nikon lenses. Fuji does not make their own lenses though.

you're asking approximately compatibility between lenses from diverse manufacturers of dSLR's? there is none. Get a lens from an identical kind as your digital camera. that's it. Do you recommend in an identical kind? Nikon is extremely a lot sparkling approximately what fashions have an autofocus motor geared up into the physique and what would not. people who don't will basically autofocus with AF-S and AF-I lenses. Canon isn't that sparkling approximately it and there have been situations the place an previous Canon lens isn't regarded by employing a extra modern physique giving basically a time-honored warning contained in this type of Err99. Sony is incredibly new having absorbed Minolta so all new Sony lenses alongside with those branded with Zeiss have no compatibility themes with all their dSLR's. there are particular themes even nevertheless with their SLT cameras. Pentax has no compatibility themes in any respect. they're the only organization that could state that each and every physique lenses made by employing and for the Pentax will artwork with all Pentax dSLR's. I went the Pentax way for the undemanding reason that I have already got a great determination of previous screwmount and ok-mount lenses. i do no longer ought to fret approximately procuring new lenses. I basically purchase previous. i'm optimistic my dSLR can cope with it.

Fuji bodies mount F mount Nikkor lenses, but i do not think there is a similar compatibility with any other brand. The Sony lens will not mount on your Nikon body. It only takes F-Mount lenses, and Sony doesn't make F mount lenses. In short, it will not work. I do not think there is an adapter, but i might be wrong. You will have to get another lens unfortunately.

Every camera has it's own mount and lenses do not fit.

You can not put a Sony lens on a Nikon without an adapter. But, remind, adapters do not transmit electronic functions and an adapter will allow you to mount it but you need to focus manual. AF is then out of game.

Best is to get a Nikon F mount lens, doesn't matter the brand.

Main Brands like Sigma, Tokina and Tamron build lenses for all bodies what ever the brand is and you will easy find on that fits in the shop where the Sony comes from.

There are other lens brands like Cosina that is indeed a Zeiss owned company that builds Sony Zeiss lenses as well, then there is Quantaray that is a hybrid name for Sigma lenses, Vivitar that is to avoid cause bad quality.

Best in the whole line is Tokina, sharp as a razor and built like a Tank but limited in selection and ranges. Their 11-16/2.8 wide angle is the world's sharpest lens ever made. The 12-24 has a solid reputation as well. But watch out, the D40 only autofocuses with HSM motorized lenses and Tokina doesn't has any despite of the fact that Tokina lenses are easy to use with manual focus.

So, run to the shop but first know what you need. Superzoom, get a Tamron 18-270 VC HSM, 50 mm kind wide open, the Sigma 30/1.4HSM is a real hammer, mid range Nikon 16-85 VR and affordable tele, the 70-200D VR from Nikon, Makro the Nikon 105/2.8. VR. Note that all Nikon VR lenses are HSM.

it takes nikor lenses. there are some aftermarket lens manufactuerers who make lenses for the big name cameras. Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and quantaray. Sigme being the best quality, sometimes better than stock lenses. quantaray, (ritz brand), suck. prime, or fixed focal length, lenses are better optically than zooms. each focal length has it's optimul use. like for your camera with a cropped sensor size, 50mm is optimum for portraits. 18-35mm for landscapes. 200mm and up for wildlife. then there's specific duty lenses, like macro or fisheye. but anyway, no, it dose'nt fit. exchange it for a nikon fit. or a Sigma for nikon fit.

Lenses are built for one of the several different "lens mounts" found on dSLRs:

F mount: Used by Nikon and Fuji

EF Mount: Used by Canon

A/α mount: Previously used by Minolta, now by Sony

SA mount: Used by Sigma

K mount: Used by Pentax and Samsung

4:3 mount: Used by Olympus and Panasonic

A lens made for one of these mounts will not fit on any of the others. And most body makers, with the exception of Sigma, only make lenses for their own respective mount.
