I'm planning to purchase a Battery Grip BG-E5 for my Canon XSi but I don't exactly know what it does. Does it function as a battery pack or just a compartment that you put batteries in?

It requires that you add batteries in it. It is a reserve battery pack for your camera. It also acts as a larger hand grip, which is good if you have large hands. Generally Canon Grips will hold 2 batteries (like the one in your camera) and will allow another backup installation of several AA batteries. It also allows you to mount the camera to a bipod or tripod. You will notice the female coupling nut on the bottom of the grip. I highly recommend the Battery Grip.

A battery grip does a couple of things.
1. It provides a place for 1 to 2 batteries, giving you more shots and faster response.
2. The grip provides the same controls and buttons for your hand when you turn the camera sideways for "portrait" mode shooting.

The grip fits into the slot where you would normally put your battery, and your battery (or 2) go into the grip, and power the camera from there.
