Has anybody had problem with the Fujifilm FinePix S4500 flash?

I brought my girlfriend a Fujifilm FinePix S4500 for Christmas. After 'briefly' skimming the manual we can't seem to make the flash well, flash? We've tried it with the flash on in the dark, even force flash and nothing seemed to happen? I was just wondering if there was a certain mode or anything, or if i should send it back as it seems to be broke. Not very camera savvy so any help would be amazing!

There is a "menu" setting that enables you to choose for the flash to go off anytime it is needed. Also two other settings which won't allow the flash to be set at all, and the one where the flash fires ALL the time (good for flash fill shots in daylight. If this does not work then I would contact Fuji for additional help and possibly send in the camera. DO NOT SEND the camera by way of your dealer. Sending it your self cuts costs and the return is much faster than dealer sent in models.
